glamrocktiger @ 04:27 pm: Paranormal Activity / classic Nosferatu

NOW PLAYING at the Del Mar Theatre in Santa Cruz, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY. This movie has been generating a lot of buzz! There was a sneak preview in San Francisco last night, and it's being called one of the scariest movies of all time, drawing comparisons to The Blair Witch Project and such. It's playing nightly at midnight (Del Mar Theatre, 1124 Pacific at Lincoln, Santa Cruz)

More about the film here

ALSO, currently playing at Clay (2261 Fillmore at Clay) in San Francisco, nightly at 11:55 pm, is the original vampire movie, F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu," made all the way back in 1929! If you're a horror fan and haven't seen it yet, you must correct that immediately!

When The Blair Witch Project came out, there was tons of hype about it, and everyone (including myself) went to see it in the theater. I thought it was fairly scary at the time, and appreciated the fact that it harkened back to the days when horror meant suspense and psychology rather than severed limbs and geysers of blood. Then the hype backfired and everyone who had at first been terrified by Blair Witch decided it was bogus and turned on it. Whatever. I posted this to let people know about current horror films that are playing. The buzz about Paranormal Activity is what OTHER people are saying. I haven't seen it. Have you?

And out of curiosity, what do YOU think are the scariest horror movies?

I would agree with hype regarding BWP. That's about it. Frankly, it just wasn't scary eeh..except for maybe watching the chicks extreme close up of her nose.
I think Paranormal Activity is really trying to mimic BWP's 'hype'success by dubbing itself the 'scariest picture eva on it's website. Even the trailer where the audience is gasping and reacting to the film's fairly average scare tactic stuff has me doubled over in laughter. It's a ridiculous attempt at brainwashing the public - trying to preprogram them a head of time to expect 'the scariest eva.'

What is the scariest movie? I think the majority of movies today have lost the ability to produce a visceral scare.

In my own opinion, I prefer movies like 'The Exorcist' or 'Sesson 9'..but I would never follow that up with a claim that they're 'the scariest.' Certainly, for 1973, I'd say The Exorcist probably did a damn fine job of it..but today's scarist is pretty non existent. There's just no subtlety in todays market. Even trailers have to spend 2 min giving it all the way. So what's the point as there's no genuine scare or mystic.

Well, you may be right about Paranormal Activity aping the hype of the Blair Witch Project. These days we have such cultural amnesia people don't even seem to remember things that happened just a decade before (let alone back in 1973). It does look like that's what PA is trying to do, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a let-down; in fact, I probably only see it months from now via Netflix, not in the theater.

Still, it seemed reasonable to mention it in a community devoted to Bay Area Horror. I just joined this community, and also just moved to the Bay Area, so I want to help liven things up.

And don't forget I also mentioned NOSFERATU in my post. I myself have only seen parts of this film, and never in the theater. Being a serious and lifelong aficionado of the horror genre (I even took a college class on horror films a couple years ago, and got an A in it!), I'm excited at the chance to see this classic on the big screen for the first time.
